In my
work I wrap, cover and enclose objects and images of the body.
By binding my body and objects in this way I ask myself when does
care turn from protection and comfort into suppression? Though
a personal issue, it is also I political one. I look at airport
security and wonder at their ability to open my private belongings
and search them with abandon, making it legitimate only with a
sticker and a flyer stuck inside my bag.
My sculptural installations consist of sewn and manipulated fabric
(apparel, home decor, equestrian, camping, nautical) as well as
photographic images and video of the body. The Wrapping Set Series
and Construction Package Series are formal investigations of wrapping
inspired by a trip to Japan, while the larger installation work
often take inspiration from political images in the newspaper
which turn personal overtime as I explore them in my work.
My art references architecture, clothing, and customs to investigate
boundaries of personal verses public space. I like to play with
these trappings that can serve to wrap people into a social structure.
Throughout history there are examples of people's erasure if they
don't fit into society's structure. As society becomes more advanced
does individualism become more or less threatening? How do we
define ourselves in relationship to a social history that encompasses
and precedes us? Can we tailor society to meet our needs? My installations
grapple with these questions.
